So now I’m going attempt to convince you to swish a spoonful of oil around your mouth each morning. It’s great for you. You’ll enjoy it… honestly! Tough crowd?!
Oil pulling is an Ayurverdic technique that improves oral and general health. Essentially, the oil acts like a magnet to bacteria in the mouth and throat and draws out impurities, which you then spit out, and happy days! I was convinced to try it by my old friend and mentor, Janey Holliday, a few years back, and I haven’t looked back since!
Using an organic oil such as coconut or sesame oil (I always use coconut), you put a spoonful in your mouth, and swish it around like mouthwash, even adding a bit of gargling if you can. Now here’s the thing, you have to do it for about 20 minutes. I live in an area where no one is about at 6am in the morning, so I do it while I’m walking the dog (and only on occasion have I had to spit it out mid shout to tell the dog off!). I find it a relaxing way to start the day without having to talk to anyone – think of it as your morning quiet time. And it’s a great little face work out too!
When you spit the oil out, DON’T spit it out down your sink and don’t swallow it – you want to get rid of the bacteria, not ingest it! Spit it into the bin. Then rinse your mouth with some salty water to make sure it’s all gone.
I try to do this every day, and here are some of the benefits I have experienced first-hand:
- Better gum health
- Whiter teeth
- Cleared out congestion of sinuses
- Helped clear up skin issues around my jawline (it has been said to help balance hormones!)
When I practice consistently I really see results. Try it for a week, even if you can only manage 5 minutes a day, and see if you feel the benefits!
