The other day I finally got around to editing some of my footage from when I went to Sri Lanka in April, and I was reminded of what an amazing trip it was, so I thought I would share some of my experience with you.
I went with a friend, and I convinced her to do yoga with me and in return I went on Safari with her. We were collected from the airport and embarked on an 8 hour drive down to the South of the island, to where we were staying in Saraii Village. Now this was no normal lodgings. It was a beautiful tree house, with Yoga every morning and evening. We were to be here for three days, before moving on to Yala National Park to camp for two nights and enjoy two more days of Safari.
Saraii Village employees were the most welcoming. On arriving we were given a delicious freshly prepared juice, and this was just the start of some amazing food. My yoga improved, we went for a bike ride, a tuctuc journey, a beach visit, and a short safari trip in Bundala National Park all in three days. On the last day we were driven down to the lake for our farewell breakfast, where we enjoyed my most favourite traditional food – string hoppers (rice noodles which you dip in curries – delicious!). The whole experience of living in an open air tree house (especially when the thunder storm came!) was just wonderful, and I really felt relaxed, awed and inspired being there!
We were then collected and taken to our new home for the last two nights, with Sri Lankan Expeditions. The substantial tent lacked aircon, but the early nights and early starts meant we didn’t actually spend too much time there. Once again the food was delicious, but the real fun came on safari. Known for leopards in Yala, we were constantly alert with our eyes peeled. And we were not disappointed… in between elephants, monkeys, and the most beautiful birds, we managed to catch a glimpse of a leopard slowly making his way down the road. What a sighting!
The whole experience was one I will never forget, and the short trip has left me wanting to go back for more. I can’t recommend it highly enough, and look forward to me next visit!
